LONDON -- The buzz ahead of Thursday's Ivor Novello Awards ceremony in central London mostly centered on whether Amy Winehouse would show. Well, she did in the end, but not until 10 minutes after her father had graced the stage to collect her one and only trophy.
Winehouse was one of many glittering stars who attended the ceremony, affectionately known as the "Ivors," joining the likes of David Gilmour, Robert Plant, Mika and Phil Collins.
The five-time Grammy-winning singer was nominated three times ahead of the gala, converting a win in the best song musically and lyrically category for "Love Is a Losing Game", published by EMI Music Publishing.
Her father, Mitch, collected the award on her behalf, saying, "Amy couldn't get here. She's getting better, and she sends all her love." He went on to thank a list of contributors behind her award, singling out her manager, noting "Raye (Cosbert), he should be awarded ... is there an equivalent of a Victoria Cross in the music business?"
The singer and Cosbert arrived through a back door during the presentation of the following award, while her father was still backstage being photographed.
One of the biggest honors handed out during the lunchtime gala was the lifetime achievement accolade, received this year by Pink Floyd guitarist and frontman David Gilmour. "Let's hope in 20 or 30 years, Amy Winehouse will get one of these long service gongs, "he told the audience. "(My career) feels like a long, long time," Gilmour told Billboard after wining the prize. "It's very nice to get this award."
Led Zeppelin great Robert Plant was called upon to present the international achievement award to veteran artist Phil Collins, who famously filled in behind the drums when the rock giants played Live Aid in 1985. "Phil is perhaps. over the past 40 years, one of the top five drummers (Britain has) had," he remarked.
Collins, who endures a tough time with the British press, showed his humour hadn't deserted him. "We always get together for a kiss on the lips every 10 years," he said of Plant, before tipping a hat to a well-received Cadbury's chocolate TV campaign, which features a gorilla playing along to Collins' 1981 hit "In the Air Tonight."
"I can't get away without thanking the gorilla," he told the audience, after thanking his band Genesis, his team, and his manager. "It can't have gone unnoticed that he is far more talented and better-looking than me. And I'm going to give him the Genesis job."
The Ivors album award went to Radiohead's "In Rainbows," published in the U.K. by Warner/Chappell Music Publishing. The members of the British alternative rock act were unable to attend because they were having "a reunion with their children, who they haven't seen for months," commented the gala's host, Paul Gambaccini.
Mika grabbed the songwriter of the year trophy. Gabrielle took the award for the outstanding song collection, Soul II Soul founder Jazzy B won the new Ivors inspiration category, and Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, the core duo in British 1970s-80s hitmakers Squeeze, received the PRS outstanding contribution to British music award.
The PRS most performed work honor went to Take That's "Shine," published by Sony/ATV Music Publishing/EMI Music Publishing/Universal Music Publishing/V2 Music Publishing.
The 53rd annual ceremony was presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, in association with the Performing Right Society.
The 15 awards, which celebrate the achievements of the best British composers and musicians from the previous year, are judged either by a panel of BACS members or on sales and broadcast performance.
Songwriting master Diane Warren claimed the special international award during the lunchtime gala. Collins returned to the stage to present Warren with her trophy. "She's a remarkable woman, and she's very shy, which is strange for an American," he joked.
During her acceptance speech, Warren quipped, "Thankfully, this is one of the last awards. You're probably all drunk, and I'm not." Warren could have rectified the situation as Sony ATV publishing hosted a special reception for the songwriter directly after the awards ceremony.

Glam-pop German quartet makes teens swoon
LOS ANGELES - Move over Jonas Brothers, the Kaulitz twins are moving in.The 18-year-old Kaulitz brothers comprise half of Tokio Hotel, a German glam-pop quartet that is creating Beatles-like hysteria among the teen set in their native land. They've sold close to 3 million CDs and DVDs in their native country, and are hoping to replicate that rabid fan base in the United States."They're the stepping stone between the tween stuff and My Chemical Romance," says Andrew Gyger, senior product manager for Virgin Entertainment Group, a few days after the foursome appeared at Virgin's Times Square store in New York in May to promote its English-language album, "Scream.""The in-store was massive in terms of sales and the amount of girls that showed up," Gyger says, relaying stories of at least one girl fainting and screaming teens lining up around the block for the event. "The band seems to have come out of nowhere."Actually, Tokio Hotel came out of the internet. A YouTube search shows 123,000 video listings compared to 88,100 for the Jonas Bros. or 21,000 for a grizzled veteran like Bruce Springsteen. To further sate their young fans' appetite, for the last six months the band has produced weekly episodes of Tokio Hotel TV for its US website.
For Tokio Hotel, the visual is as vital as the vocals and is propelled by lead singer Bill Kaulitz's anime look: straightened, teased black hair; heavy eye makeup that accentuates his delicate, androgynous, doll-like features; chain necklaces and vintage rock and roll T-shirts. He's so thin he appears almost one dimensional on stage, adding to the cartoon-like appeal. But to hear him tell it, his look comes by way of Transylvania, not Japan.When he was 10, Bill Kaulitz dressed as a vampire for Halloween and adopted the styling year-round."After that, I started to color my hair and polish my nails. I started to wear makeup and stuff. I'd never heard of (anime)," Bill Kaulitz said in an interview at the Avalon Hollywood before to the group's sold-out show in Los Angeles. He, his brother, bassist Georg Listing, 20, and drummer Gustav Schafer, 19, are squashed together in a leather booth in the lounge one floor above the Avalon stage. Both he and Tom speak very good, albeit heavily accented, English, although an interpreter stands by in case any translation is needed.Tom Kaulitz, the older brother by 10 minutes ("A lot of people think Bill is the boss, but I am the boss," he laughs), developed his hip-hop/dreads look when he was seven or eight, in part as a way to differentiate himself from his identical twin. "When we were six, we looked the same," Tom Kaulitz said. "We had sweat shirts with (the names) Bill and Tom so that teachers had a chance to know who's who."

Christina Aguilera - Aguilera Poised To Launch New Perfume
Pop star CHRISTINA AGUILERA has announced plans to launch another addition to her perfume range later this year (08).
The singer has taken time off from her music career since she gave birth to her first child, Max, in January (08) - and has instead spent her time as a new mother working on her third scent.
Aguilera's two previous fragrances, Xpose and Simply Christina, have both garnered international success and the new scent, Inspire, is due to hit shops in the autumn (08).

Unlike the never-ending Democratic presidential race, America won't have to wait long to find out who will win this year's "American Idol." But even before the singing champ is crowned Wednesday night, semifinalist David Cook has practically conceded the contest.
In an interview with UsMagazine.com following Tuesday night's show, Cook refrained from arguing with judge Simon Cowell's assertion that David Archuleta won the evening. "You know, everybody's got an opinion, and tonight was Archuleta's night," Cook reportedly told the site. "I have to concede it: The kid came out all three songs and nailed it. But I walk away from this with my head held high."
While Cook got positive remarks for his Clive Davis-chosen cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," Cowell preferred Archuleta's take on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," as well as his reprise of John Lennon's "Imagine." After the first song, Cowell speculated that the crown might rest on Archuleta's head after the final elimination.
Though his take on Collective Soul's "The World I Know" drew jeers from Cowell, Cook told the magazine he didn't think his song choice was a bad one. "I don't feel like I've won it or lost it," Cook said after the show. "I feel like it's completely out of my hands. ... But I did what I set out to do tonight, which is to have fun and just embrace the moment. Mission accomplished."
And though the judges set him up as the almost unbeatable winner-to-be, Archuleta told the magazine that he's not getting fitted for the crown just yet. "Even though Simon wasn't so favoring Cook, he did so well, and I think America will realize that," Archuleta reportedly told the site. "You never know what will happen."
No matter who ends up winning, Archuleta said he looks up to the older competitor. "I just feel it's cool to be able to be next to [Cook], someone you look up to," he said.

“USA Today is idiotic to run such an irresponsible advertisement suggesting that drinking and driving is some kind of American ‘tradition’ we should protect,” Lohan’s lawyer Blair Berk said in a statement. “Not identifying that this ad was paid for by the liquor and restaurant industries is profoundly reckless.
“Drunk white businessmen, drunk housewives out for girls night out and drunk wedding parties should be kept off the roads of America,” Berk continued. “Lindsay Lohan fully endorses ignition interlock devices, which have been well-proven to save lives.”
